Experimental research on the dissociative recombination of H3+ in the zeroth vibrational level is reviewed. It is concluded that the evidence that the recombination coefficient at 300 K is around 1.5 x 10 exp -7 cu cm/sec is overwhelming. However, such a high rate coefficient has appeared irreconcilable with theory, there being no crossing of potential energy curves favorable to dissociative recombination at low temperature. This has caused at least an element of doubt. A crossing of potentials is not required for the multistep dissociative recombination which has recently been introduced. It is shown that this process may explain the experimental results.
