The enhancement factor for the rate of thermonuclear reactions in the strong-screening regime is calculated through explicit consideration of correlations between ions. The correlation functions are accurately estimated with the aid of existing Monte Carlo computations. It is shown that the previous result obtained by DeWitt et al. (1973) amounts to an overestimation of the screening effect because of their neglect of the spatial dependence of the screening function. Consequences of the present calculation for explosive carbon burning in a degenerate stellar core are pointed out.
