The gyro lines are a pair of resonance lines in the power spectrum of incoherent scatter. They correspond to the electrostatic wavemode omega(g) about equal to Omega(e) cos alpha of a magnetized plasma, where alpha is the angle between the magnetic field and the scattering wave vector and Omega(e) is the electron gyro frequency. The main task of this paper is to study the effect of suprathermal electrons (i.e. precipitating electrons, photoelectrons, and secondary electrons) on the gyro lines. It is shown that the lines can be enhanced if the velocity component of the suprathermal electrons in the direction of the wave matches the phase velocity of the wave. The suprathermal electrons are represented both by a shifted Maxwellian and by a power-law velocity distribution in the calculations.
