Electron-whistler mode wave particle interactions are a candidate mechanism for electron phase space diffusion to produce auroral precipitation. We consider the stochastic interaction between relativistic electrons and whistler mode waves of more than one wavenumber. We initially consider two oppositely directed monochromatic whistlers to analytically demonstrate the fundamental behaviour of the system. For sufficient wave amplitudes we show that, in addition to resonant diffusion expected for a single monochromatic whistler, the stochasticity in the system results in phase space diffusion of particles not at resonance with either of the waves. We then consider the interaction with a single wavepacket, and finally with two oppositely directed broad band wavepackets. We derive an approximate equation of motion for the wave packet system and in particular show that the dynamics of an electron interacting with a single wavepacket is essentially that of the electron- two wave case. The Lyapunov exponents are estimated and thus the diffusion coefficient. We find that the mechanism produces significant pitch angle scattering for wave amplitudes consistent planetary magnetospheres such as at the Earth and Jupiter.
