The Voyager 2 (V2) observations of the heliospheric termination shock indicate that it is heavily influenced by the presence of interstellar pickup ions (PUIs). The V2 instrument measured less solar wind heating than expected and a downstream flow speed that remained supersonic. While PUIs are expected to play a role in energy dissipation at the shock, the details remain unclear. Here, we use particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and show that PUIs indeed play an important role and that the downstream flow speed remains supersonic if the magnetosonic speed were measured without the contribution of PUIs.
