[0342] Atmospheric Composition And Structure / Middle Atmosphere: Energy Deposition
Scientific paper
An important goal of the SABER experiment is the study of the energy budget of the mesosphere region. Further investigation will lead to better understanding of the thermal structure, dynamics, and composition of this area of the atmosphere. To this end, an ongoing study by the SABER Science Team is the investigation of the various sources and sinks of energy in the middle atmosphere and their evolution and impact. The SABER version 1.07 dataset contains key solar energy deposition rates, exothermic chemical reaction energy deposition rates, and infrared cooling rates. Several important additional heating rates were calculated for this study. These include molecular oxygen solar heating in the Schumann-Runge continuum and Schumann-Runge bands, Lyman-alpha, and oxygen A-band. Chemical heating from seven important chemical reactions derived from hydroxyl Meinel band emissions are also included. These component elements of the mesosphere energy balance were combined to calculate net heating in the mesosphere. Results from yaw-years 2004 and 2009, and future directions are presented.
