Published photographs of the Soviet Energia heavy lift launch vehicle allow dimensional data to be derived. The strap-on boosters are 4 m in diameter and 39 in length. Dry mass is about 42 tonnes, and propellant mass is about 385 tonnes. The second-stage core is approximately the same size as the external tank of the NASA Space Shuttle, for a dry mass of about 55 tonnes and propellant load of about 800 tonnes. While the four strap-on boosters are recoverable, it is not clear whether the second-stage core booster is recoverable for reuse as well. The Soviets have announced that Energia can place payloads of 32 tonnes on translunar trajectories, or 27 tonnes on trajectories to Venus or Mars.
