The Energia booster will allow the Soviet Union to loft 100 tonnes into LEO in the 1990s; the Buran space shuttle vehicle will also be able to return 20-tonne payloads from orbit. Together, Energia and Buran will facilitate the delivery and assembly of modules for the space station Mir 2, which will with its 100-tonne core module be five times larger than Mir 1. The core liquid-fueled rocket powerplant of Energia is the first in the Soviet inventory to burn cryogenic propellants; together with four strap-on solid rocket boosters, Energia generates 3500 tonnes of thrust, surpassing the NASA's Saturn 5. Buran has a launch weight of 105 tonnes with full payload, and it is expected that a fleet size of four vehicles will eventually be constructed.
