Two aspects of the energetics of static bosonic superconducting string configurations are discussed, making use of variational calculations. Firstly, the critical current and the spring current are re-examined from an energetic point of view; the possibility that these might be considerably lower than previous estimates is discussed. Secondly, it is shown that the expectation value of the field responsible for superconductivity decreases in magnitude as the gradient of its phase along the string increases, in the lowest energy state. Thus, the current is bounded at the classical level.
