Abundances of elements and isotopes have been essential for identifying and measuring the sources of the energetic ions and for studying the physical processes of acceleration and transport for each particle population in the heliosphere. Many of the sources are surprising, in a few cases the acceleration bias is extreme, but an understanding of the fundamental physics allows us to use energetic ions to determine abundances for the average solar corona, the high-speed solar wind, and the local interstellar medium. .
