It is noted that the 1975-1978 period has seen a dramatic expansion of the experimental data base on the composition of the hot plasmas in the magnetosphere. This paper reviews work carried out on the energetic ion composition of the magnetosphere during this quadrennium. Consideration is given to (1) the enhanced ring current during geomagnetic storms, (2) periods identified with substorms or as being generally quiescent magnetically, and (3) the source and acceleration regions and the related processes.
