An empirical model of the ion composition of the upper ionosphere for the altitude range of 400-1000 km is developed which can be used in the IRI-78 model in the IONDEN procedure. This simple model of relative ion composition above the F2-layer maximum agrees on the whole with the IRI-78 model for Phi = 30-35 deg. The empirical model does have the following advantages over IRI-78: it takes into account N(+) ions and the dependence of composition on solar activity, and it provides for an improved determination of the dependence on latitude and solar zenith angle.
