To investigate polar extremely low frequency (ELF) wave propagation during a solar proton event (SPE), a series of measurements was carried out on the properties of ELF sferics (75 Hz) recorded at Byrd Station, Antarctica during a moderately large SPE. Amplitude and time of occurrence measurements on a total of 320,181 sferics were considered. It was found that an SPE can significantly alter the characteristics of ELF signals propagating through the polar regions; there was a reduction of about 50% in the median amplitudes of the sferics during the first 24 hours of the SPE, compared with before the SPE. There were also substantial changes in the rates of occurrence, but no polar cap blackout of the sferics. The measurements indicated that ELF signal propagation through the polar regions during an SPE is comparatively stable.
