On approach to Comet Halley the APV-N low-frequency detectors carried by the Vega spacecraft recorded plasma-wave intensity enhancements, representing the inbound crossing of quasi-perpendicular (Vega 1) or quasi-parallel (Vega 2) shocks located (1.0-1.3) x 10 to the 6th km from the nucleus. Distinctive postshock plasma oscillations were also detected, as well as waves due to dust impacts on the sensors and on the spacecraft. Plasma waves were excited through anomalously rapid ionization of the cometary atmosphere by suprathermal electrons, presumably because of the critical ionization-velocity phenomenon.
