A method for determining the characteristics of the magnetopause for the case of a finite shock layer is discussed which removes the problem of defining neutral points in a meaningful way. A simple approximation is used for the magnetic pressure field, and the description of the plasma pressure in the finite shock layer is improved. In the present method, the dynamic pressure is calculated within the shock layer by subjecting the solar wind to appropriate jump conditions across the shock. For infinitesimal shock layer thickness, the theory reduces to the Newtonian approximation, and it places the magnetopause stagnation point at the proper distance without using the adjustable parameter required in conventional theory.
