The infinitesimal generators of the set of transformations which preserve the form invariance of the Robertson-Walker metric characterizing a homogeneous, isotropic universe close to form a Lie algebra. A Casimir operator of this algebra is found whose eigenvalue is identified with mass squared. This operator reduces in a coordinate representation to the Klein-Gordon equation over small regions of space-time.
