The case for a gold coating on the Giotto spacecraft front shield is argued. Previous studies show that the fraction of emitted ions of sputtered surface material is least for gold, and that relative secondary electron yield is nearly constant for all surface materials. Gold coatings have a relative ion yield between - 1 million and - 0.000,001, with a monotonic potential structure. The positive floating potential is determined by balancing the electron currents and is strongly shielded by the emitted electrons alone. The value of the floating potential, calculated by balancing the current densities of emitted particles, depends mainly on the ambient plasma properties.
