Electrolyte electroreflectance studies of the ternary semimagnetic semiconductor Hg(1-x)Mn(x)Te are reported for compositions below x = 0.2. The dependence of the E1 and E1 + Delta(1) transition energies on the composition are determined on the basis of the low field approximation. The results provide valuable information for understanding the compositional dependence of some features of the band structure of mercury manganese telluride alloys. No discontinuities are observed in any of the samples. An example of the topographic variation of stoichiometric composition is presented for one wafer of these materials. From these results, it is shown that electrolyte electroreflectance is a very sensitive, useful, and convenient technique for characterizing such alloys.
