Ab initio calculations of the cross sections for electron-impact ionization of the valence states of CO are performed using the Schwinger multichannel variational method. Both differential and integral cross sections are obtained. The integral cross sections are compared to various experimental excitation functions, and reasonable agreement is found. Estimates of the total cross section for electronic excitation of CO by low-energy electrons are given.
