An e.s.r. study of the carbonaceous material isolated from a sample of the Orgueil meteorite showed that this material behaved upon carbonisation in a manner similar to terrestrial low-rank carbonaceous material, indicating that this material was never exposed to a temperature above about 300°C. Furthermore, this similarity applies to the bulk of the carbonaceous material and does not originate from trace contaminants. These conclusions are independent of the nature and origin of the free radicals in the material prior to carbonisation.
