Experimental studies of electron-impact ionization (EII) have rarely made explicit quantitative adjustments for the contribution of metastable ions in ion beam preparation. Because the EII cross sections for metastable ions are typically larger than for ground state ions, some uncertainty exists in the previously published cross sections and rate coefficients. In an effort to ascertain the accuracy of previously suggested cross sections and rate coefficients, the total EII cross sections for Be-like C, N, and O ions were studied using the crossed beams apparatus at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The metastable components of the ion beams were measured using a He gas attenuation technique. Recommended EII cross sections and Maxwellian rate coefficients will be presented in comparison to previously published values and new theoretical results.
