The results of an optical method study of the production of the D3Sigma(+)u(v = 0) and c'4(1)Sigma(+)u(v = 0) states of N2 by controlled electron collision with molecules in the lowest vibrational level of the singlet Chi(1)Sigma(+)g ground state are reported and discussed. Three characteristic features are found: a principal maximum occurring at 14.1 + or - 0.3 eV where the D(v = 0) - B optical-emission cross section reaches a value of 1.3 x 10 to the 19th/sq cm, a smaller maximum at 23 eV, and an E to the -3rd energy dependence for incident electron energies over 65 eV. It is also shown that the cascade contribution of the D3Sigma(+)u state to the population of the B3Pi(g) and the metastable A3Sigma(+)u states of N2 via D - B and D - B - A, respectively, is quite small with respect to the contribution from the N2 C3Pi(u) state via C - B and C - B - A.
