The Q(3P-3s 3S0) and Q(3P-3s-5S0) cross sections for electron-impact excitation of atomic oxygen are calculated using theoretical threshold energies and a five-state close-coupling expansion. Three other cross sections are also obtained so that the cascade contribution to the first cross section can be estimated. The structure just above the O(3s 3S0) threshold is investigated in an effort to resolve the discrepancy with the experimentally determined cross section. It is shown that the shape resonances just above this threshold are unphysical since they result from poorly positioned autodetaching states and that the shape resonances should be located below threshold as Feshbach resonances. The cross sections obtained are compared with previously calculated ones.
