Ionospheric probe data are used to analyze electron density distribution in the unilluminated sector of the auroral oval, in the subauroral ionosphere, and in the polar cap. When magnetosphere-ionosphere correlations and geomagnetic factors are taken into account, certain distribution patterns are defined. These patterns can be used to construct an empirical model of the polar ionosphere.
