From a rocket fired into a night-time auroral absorption event simultaneous measurements were made of the positive ion density, N+, and the density of free electrons, N. The results show a decreasing ratio of with decreasing altitude. A number of electron density profiles have been obtained during similar conditions but without positive ion measurements. These profiles have been analyzed, and it is shown that at the lower levels of the D-region, more free electrons are present during the day than during the night. Both types of results are consistent in showing that negative ions must be an important constituent of the night-time D-region.
