A simple model of the return stroke is presented. The staggered leader smears negative charges from the cloud along the channel to the ground and, during the return stroke this charge is carried to the ground. The accelerated movement of the charges invokes the electromagnetic signal. A one-dimentional approximation of the channel is used in the analysis, that is, all the physical characteristics are averaged over the cross section of the channel. An expression for describing the charge distribution after passage of the staggered leader is also considered. It is shown that, in this model, the form and parameters of the electromagnetic signal generated during the return stroke depends primarily on the distribution of the excess charge in the column formed by the staggered leader.
