The paper summarizes work carried out to obtain good data on the electrical conductivity of an extensive suite of lunar samples and to determine the material most representative of the lunar interior. Experimental techniques described include low-frequency ac and dc electrical-conductivity measurements, measurements of remanent and intrinsic magnetic properties, Moessbauer spectroscopy, and electron petrography. It is shown that the conductivity of a multiphase specimen is determined by the silicate phases present in large volume fractions, that the average iron content of the lunar interior is 7% to 16%, and that temperature as well as conductivity profiles support a hot-moon hypothesis.
