The objective of the study was to investigate several small scale aspects of the effects of Birkeland currents on electric field mapping both with and without the presence of parallel electric fields. The study employs the basic quiet time magnetospheric model developed by Beard (1979), supplemented by the addition of line current loops in order to investigate the effects of Birkeland currents in regions of the magnetosphere that are of particular interest to substorm studies. In particular, attention is given to effects in the immediate vicinity of sheet currents (e.g., region 1 - region 2 auroral system and sheet currents associated with discrete auroral forms) and in the immediate vicinity of an extended model substorm current system.
