Analytical expressions are derived relating field-aligned currents with the pressure of magnetospheric plasma. An analysis is presented of variations of the magnetic field at the earth due to the current system associated with the plasma inhomogeneity in the inner magnetosphere. The Dessler-Parker-Skobke theorem is extended to the case of an arbitrary distribution of plasma in the inner magnetosphere in the case of homogeneous ionospheric conductivity. It is shown that the Dst index to the first approximation makes it possible to investigate the transfer of energy into the magnetosphere or the variation of solar-wind pressure.
