Love wave amplitude data are satisfied by an Earth model in which the intrinsic internal friction (Q-1) at each depth is taken to be due to a single thermally activated relaxation mechanism. In this model the intrinsic Q-1 is completely specified by a simple function of frequency, temperature, and pressure. This model is in better agreement with observed behavior of solids than previous models and requires fewer arbitrary parameters to satisfy seismic data.
