Acoustic and static compression data provide complementary data on the elastic properties of minerals; when both types of data are available, they can be combined to yield refined values of the bulk modulus Ko and its pressure derivative Ko'. Magnetoelastic interactions in the vicinity of second-order phase transitions in 3d transition element oxides have marked effects on their elastic behavior. For hematite, acoustic data indicate that Ko decreases by 10% across the Morin transition at P = 15 kbar and T = 298 K, producing a change in slope of the pressure-volume equation of state which is also reflected in the static compression data for multi-domained specimens. Such discontinuities in the bulk modulus are difficult to observe in static compression experiments, but are commonly associated with second-order phase transitions and help to explain anomalies in the data for other magnetic oxides.
