Some features of the strong echoes received from the mesopause region by the EISCAT VHF radar at Tromso, Norway on July 17, 1987 are discussed. The stronger echoes from about 1120 UT onwards are shown to form a sequence with a period of about 45 minutes. The suggestion that the small-scale structure causing the mesopause echoes is triggered by gravity waves of 45-minute periodicity is not supported by the velocity data of the GEN-11 experiment for this day.
