The results of an experimental investigation of the properties of mercury thiogallate crystals (HgGa2S4) as radiation converters are reported. It is shown that, with 20% quantum conversion efficiencies, the mercury thiogallate crystal is the most promising material for conversion of wideband signals such as high-pressure CO2 laser radiation or a heat source. It is concluded that the crystal is also suitable for use in recording the radiation of objects emitting at wavelengths within the atmospheric window of 10-11 microns, and could be applied to the visualization of the spectra of fast processes between 8 and 12 microns.
