Recent observations by the Venus Express and Mars Express spacecraft show that solar storms can substantially increase the escape rate of planetary ions for short periods of time. Depending upon the geometry of the event, a shock front associated with a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) may encounter Mars, affecting the entire plasma interaction region. This must be expected to influence atmospheric escape rates in accordance with what is seen for CIRs. Using spacecraft data from Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) in conjunction with a heliospheric MHD model (ENLIL) we investigate the magnetic pressure increase in the magnetic pileup region of Mars during a typical CME event at Mars. The magnetic pressure in the magnetic pileup region on Mars is dominated by the dynamic pressure from the solar wind as pressure balance applies. MGS magnetic field and electron observations provide constraints on the arrival time of a CME shock, the flux of solar energetic particles, and the magnetic pressure close to the planet. The ENLIL model is applied to the event to determine the timing and magnitude of the expected increase in pressure upstream from Mars (and therefore in the plasma interaction region). Comparison between model and observations will be presented.
