A study is undertaken of the image characteristics which may be expected from future telescope designs whose large primary mirrors are composed of a mosaic of 36 hexagonal segments. Segmentation and imperfection effects due to faulty segment construction or control are analyzed by means of physical optics, and the diffraction-limited image distribution from the segmentation geometry of the primary is derived. Diffraction spikes are shown to be similar to those caused by secondary support struts in existing telescopes. A general relation between surface and image quality is formulated, leading to a discussion of its implications for surface quality tolerances, as well as a derivation of segment phasing error optical effects which are found to be unimportant for visible light observations.
