The effects of phasing error and random segment jitter in a multiple mirror telescope used for laser beam transmission on the average far-field, on-axis irradiance are computed. An exact expression for the Strehl ratio is obtained and shown to be more accurate than the Strehl approximation at low numbers of subapertures (less than six). The behavior of the exact Strehl ratio as a function of piston and tilt errors is illustrated for the limiting cases of a single aperture, no pointing error, and an infinity of subapertures.
