We present spectral energy distribution (SED) of symbiotic binaries. In most cases it results from photoionisation of the cool giant's wind by the hot star. Only in the case of AR Pav in our sample of 15 objects, it is dominated by a large accretion disk around a mean sequence star. We also introduce other effects of photoionisation, which are most remarkable in the optical domain: (i) A periodic wave-like variation in the light curves (LC), (ii) apparent changes of the orbital period, and (iii) an occultation effect of the ionised zone.
