The effect of time-dependent gravitation on the spontaneous compactification of space-time as proposed by Cremmer and Scherk (1976) is investigated for a six-dimensional space-time. For a metric satisfying the field equations for the Yang-Mills field and the Higgs field, solutions to the Einstein equations are analyzed in the presence of a time-dependent adjustable parameter. When an additional scalar field is introduced into the metric, it is shown that the field is initially dominated by a singlet, but, due to the time dependence, eventually is influenced by states with small angular momentum.
