In this paper, we investigate the evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game in a structured population with two communities. The number of inter-connections represents the interaction strength between the two communities. We address the question of how the interaction between two communities influences cooperation by studying five situations with different game dynamics and different community structures. We find that the interaction between communities suppresses cooperation when the levels of cooperation in isolated communities are high, whereas the interaction enhances cooperation when the levels of cooperation in isolated communities are low. For intermediate levels of cooperation in isolated communities, the interaction between communities induces a resonance-type behavior of cooperation.
