Two high altitude nuclear tests during October 1962 caused marked deviations from normal v.l.f.-propagation conditions, as observed by means of a series of v.l.f.-receivers recording simultaneously, at a chain of stations, the field strength of the transmitter GBR (16 kc/s). In both cases, on 22 October at 0441 hours M.E.T., and on 28 October at 0541 hours M.E.T., an abrupt change from normal nighttime propagation to a propagation of pure daytime type occurred for a period of about 0·5 min. The daytime propagation conditions during the following days were obviously altered: The distance of the characteristic field strength minimum moved away from its normal position (at about 490 km from the transmitter) and its shape was deformedE This alteration was observable until a new strong disturbance caused new conditions on 7 November.
