Planetary Rings: Planetary Satellites

Scientific paper

The authors consider the interactions between small satellites or ring particles which pass close to each other. Those perturbations are of the "impulse type" and not faint and continuous as in the case of planetary perturbations. This type of interaction is important because in many regions the morphology of Saturn's rings is primarily governed by close-by satellites' perturbations. The narrowness of Uranus' rings suggests strongly the presence of small satellites which confine them (Goldreich and Tremaine, 1979a).
