Considerable experimental progress in accessing new regions of neutron-rich nuclei has been made in the last years. In particular, neutron-rich nuclei in vicinity of ^78_28Ni_50 are of interest for understanding astrophysical processes. The theoretical shell-model description of the structure in this region requires knowledge of the interaction for the proton-neutron f_5/2 p_3/2 p_1/2 g_9/2 configurational space. The present contribution reports results on the determination of the T=1 part of the residual interaction for the f_5/2 p_3/2 p_1/2 g_9/2 model space basing on the analysis and fit of the available experimantal data for the ^57_28Ni_29--^78_28Ni_50 isotopes and the ^77_29Ni_50-- ^100_50Sn_50 isotones. The fit procedure, properties of the determined interaction and structure of the wave functions will be discussed. This work is supported by the NSF grant PHY-0244453.
