Recent calculations of electron impact excitation of hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on close coupling and closely related studies (involving an optical potential, or using pseudostates). Effective (thermally averaged) collision strengths deduced from these calculations are discussed, and comments are made concerning their probable reliability.
