Data are presented which provide evidence for the effect of the powerful eruption of El Chichon in March 1982 on OH emission and f(min) near the mesopause. This is explained by the penetration of a large quantity of water vapor from the eruption to the mesopause. It is sugggested that atomic hydrogen formed from the water vapor can be an additional agent that destroys ozone.
