A theoretical analysis demonstrates that the transverse magnetospheric electric field leads to the longitudinal acceleration of a charged particle moving along a curved geomagnetic field line. This effect leads to a 2-3-fold increase in the energy of polar-wind ions which have escaped from the ionosphere, as well as to an increase in the distance they have traveled to the magnetotail.
