Linearization of the radiative transfer equation is applied to the stratosphere. Calculations show a strong change in the water-vapour line shape on saturation. To interpret this phenomenon, an equivalent temperature of the stratospheric medium is suggested. The calculations are applied to terrestrial limb sighting using a spectrometer with a 0.001/cm resolution onboard a satellite.
