An analytical model is proposed which can take into account the actual distribution of electron density inside a disturbance region. Using this model, expressions are obtained which determine the focusing coefficient of electromagnetic sounding waves. It is shown that allowance for the sign of the electron-density disturbance at the periphery of an irregularity can lead to a significant increase in the gain (i.e., the focusing effect) in the case of relatively weak changes in electron density inside the irregularity, and to the appearance of focusing and defocusing regions.
