Using experimental data on the electric fields and plasma concentrations obtained by the satellite "Interkosmos-Bulgaria-1300" in the region of the main ionospheric trough near the midnight MLT sector, the authors discuss the effect of the electric field on the structure of the main ionospheric trough (MIT) and on the appearance of concentration inhomogeneities in the trough region. They propose that, even when the MIT is formed during the night sector, its structure in the near-midnight region is mainly determined by the direction and magnitude of the electric field. They consider possible formation mechanisms for the concentration inhomogeneities in the trough region.
