The reduction of contrast due to atmospheric extinction is calculated for zenith observation. The procedure of calculation is based on a simplified solution of the radiative transfer equation. The simplified solution is obtained by an approximation method similar to the two-stream approximation used for flux calculation. The resulting approximate intensities are shown to agree fairly well with those obtained by numerically solving the transfer equation. It is shown that the simplified solution can be used to interpolate between numerical results.
