An analysis is made of the effect of porosity on the determination of the parameters of solar matter according to the visible brightnesses of prominences in hydrogen lines. The porosity effect can explain the existence of shallow empirical energy curves of Balmer lines in the range of low visible brightnesses, as well as differences in tau(2i) determined according to line profiles and according to curves of growth or energy. A method for determining the porosity of optically thick quiescent prominences according to the energy curves of Balmer lines is proposed.
